Roland Hansen Commentary: George W. Bush will go down in the history books as the President who did the most damage to the United States both at home and abroad. George W, Bush should have been impeached along with the imperialist Vice President Dick Cheney, both of whom have acted in ways that demonstrate their attitude that not only are they above the law but also that the law does not apply to them.

Let me suggest that President Bush will go down in history as the one who did the second most damage to the United States at home and abroad.

The title belongs to Abraham Lincoln, who, like President Bush, showed contempt for the Constitution by rejecting the principle that the U.S. was a union of the States; instead insisting that it was a union of the people. This philosophical shift put into motion a series of events that has led to consolidation of power in the Federal government (although in fairness to him, some, but not all, of the consequences were anticipated at the time).

In brief, without President Lincoln's consolidation of Federal power in his time, the actions of President George W. Bush would not have been possible.

Roland,

I can't tell you that I am a fan of George W Bush, but I'm not sure that I'm ready to take it as far as you do. Like Harold Thomas, I believe that there are other candidates for the title.

Lincoln could certainly be on the list for abuses committed while this country was at war with itself. I would suggest however, that Franklin Delano Roosevelt might find himself on the list for likewise drawing power to the Executive Branch at the expense of the Legislative and Judicial. Further, FDR's New Deal went a long way in starting us down the road to the "nanny state" we live in today.

George may end up in the winner's circle, but we may need to let history provide a little perspective before we make the final call.

The media might cover it if the Democrats were actually going to do it or Kucinich hadnt done the same before.
