University of Toledo: President Dr. Lloyd Jacobs Should Resign Or Be Fired

Is there any confusion over the title of this entry? If so, let me clarify by stating I am of the opinion that Dr. Lloyd Jacobs should resign as President of the University of Toledo; if Lloyd Jacobs does not resign, then he should be fired. I have written about the University of Toledo before on several occasions here on Roland Hansen Commentary.

The last time I made an entry about UT was on March 23, 2008 in the entry University of Toledo: A Success As A Failure OR A Failure At Success?

The most current incident at UT that has grabbed my attention involves the firing by Dr. Lloyd Jacobs, a medical doctor surgeon turned University President earning a $385,000.00 annual salary plus benefits, of a University of Toledo administrator by the name of Crystal Dixon who wrote an article as a private citizen that describes her religious beliefs on the topic of homosexuality as it relates to the topic of discrimination. Rather than me paraphrasing that news article, take a look at it yourself by clicking on the following embedded link to The Blade article University of Toledo official fired over column.

While I do not share the beliefs of Crystal Dixon, I support her right to state and write about her beliefs. It is my opinion that Dr. Lloyd Jacobs over-reacted in his official response in his capacity of President of the University of Toledo. I further believe that not only has he misused and abused his authority in this situation, but I also believe that President Jacobs has put the taxpayers of Ohio in jeopardy. In the event that a lawsuit is filed by Ms. Dixon, it may very well be decided in her favor with a financial settlement that may include back wages and damages in the tens or thousands of dollars.

A quick search on the internet discloses many, many references to this latest incident, which I also believe demonstrates misfeasance and malfeasance on the part of Lloyd Jacobs.

Below are just a few of the references I found:

Renew America: Civil wrongs in the name of civil rights

WorldNetDaily: Firing raises 1st Amendment, equal protection issues

LifeSiteNews: Black University Employee Suspended for Objecting to Comparison between Black and Homosexual Discrimination

CampusReportOnline: Unholy Toledo

Free Republic: UT administrator fired for speaking out

Stop The ACLU: Moonbat Educator of the Week

SwampBubbles: Press Release - Response To Dr. Lloyd Jacobs Firing Crystal Dixon

You know something? I've changed my mind.
The heck with asking for the resignation of Dr. Lloyd Jacobs as University of Toledo President! He should be fired immediately!!

University of Toledo: A Non-Responsive Bureaucracy

Do you remember the Roland Hansen Commentary University of Toledo: A Force or A Farce? of last autumn in which I detailed the aggravating and frustrating experiences I had been having as a result of what I perceive as the incompetence of so-called ‘professional’ paid staff of the University of Toledo Alumni Association?

During the course of those events, I had sent e-mails to several of The University of Toledo bureaucrats. I was hopeful that perhaps someone involved with the University of Toledo administrative team would respond to my concerns. As a matter of fact, one of the e-mails I sent to University of Toledo President Dr. Lloyd Jacobs even included a message alerting him of the Roland Hansen Commentary as referenced above with the link to it.

Amongst the people who received one or more copies of my e-mail were:
Dr. Lloyd Jacobs, President of The University of Toledo
Diane Hymore, Administrative Assistant to the President
Penny Poplin Gosetti, Executive Assistant to the President
Lawrence J. Burns, Vice President for Enrollment, Marketing & Communications
Lorraine Hansen, University of Toledo Alumni Association, Phoenix Chapter President

It is now approximately four months later, and not one of those people mentioned above has ever responded to me in any way. How responsive is that? The University of Toledo receives millions of dollars in Ohio taxpayer dollars and untold of millions of dollars in donations. The University of Toledo has an extremely well paid staff. You and I should be so fortunate to get the kind of money that is paid to the ‘professional’ administrators!!!

Hell, the University of Toledo President is provided a compensation package that includes salary, traditional fringe benefits, housing, vehicle, travel allowance, expense account, and more that exceeds the compensation of most, if not all, individual elected officials in the United States of America! It’s a matter of public record; check it if you do not believe me. If Lloyd Jacobs did not want to take some of his “valuable” time to respond to me, the least he could have done, and should have done as a public administrator, was to assign that task to one of his staff. Shame on Dr. Lloyd Jacobs! Is this the way he runs the University of Toledo? Now, I feel compelled to call his competency into question.

Yeah, the University of Toledo continues to want more tax money. Yeah, the University of Toledo continues to raise its already too-high tuition. Yeah, the University of Toledo continues to beg for more financial contributions from alumni, other individuals, foundations, and corporations. Yeah, the University of Toledo continues to expand its already bloated extravagant budget. Yeah, the University of Toledo continues to promote itself in an ongoing and costly public relations campaign.

But, the University of Toledo bureaucracy does not seem to be capable of responding to an alumnus of both the undergraduate college and graduate school, such as I. Nor does The University of Toledo bureaucracy seem to be capable of responding to a former actively-involved volunteer of the Arts and Sciences Alumni Affiliate, such as I, Nor does the University of Toledo seem to be capable of responding to a former member of the University of Toledo adjunct faculty, such as I.

If the University of Toledo were a private enterprise and not an Ohio public institution, it would not survive. The University of Toledo seems to be one big incompetent bureaucracy. If the administrators of the University of Toledo are competent, they certainly do not seem to care about their alumni or former employees. And if they do care, they certainly do not demonstrate it. To me, it appears that at the very most or least, depending on one’s perspective, the University of Toledo is a non-responsive bureaucracy.

Now, will someone try to convince me of why I should support the University of Toledo financially or otherwise?

I really think Ohio Governor Ted Strickland, the Ohio General Assembly, and the Ohio Board of Regents might do all us taxpayers a service and take a good hard look at the operations of the University of Toledo.

James Hartung, Lloyd Jacobs: Controversial Fat Cats

Ohioans, specifically Toledo and Lucas County taxpayers, are being figuratively raped financially, yet once again by a couple of local fat cats.

James Hartung and Lloyd Jacobs, two prominant names in the Toledo, Ohio community are once again the center of controversy as you may read in the linked Blade articles below:

Fired leader suing port authority for $157,577 by Erica Blake
University of Toledo bonuses stir controversy by Meghan Gilbert

Neither Hartung nor Jacobs are strangers to readers of Roland Hansen Commentary as you may see by clicking on the following links to my previous commentaries concerning James Hartung and Lloyd Jacobs.

I guess my only comment today is:
Why do most people have such short memories, momentary reactionary verbal and political backlashes, and a total lack of committed corrective follow-through?

University of Toledo: A Success As A Failure OR A Failure At Success?

Is the University of Toledo a success as a failure, a failure as a success, a success, a failure, or just plain mediocre?

I read an interesting article in the Blade online about the low ranking of the University of Toledo. The article makes reference to "the 'America's Best Colleges' edition of U.S. News & World Report."

Much further down in the article, it states: "The magazine measures schools by seven 'key measures of quality,' such as graduation rate, academic reputation, and a student selectivity index that factors in grades, test scores, and class rank of incoming freshmen."

Upon reading the article, I found out that the University of Toledo ranks in the lowest ranking category of universities across America. That does not surprise me in the least.

Heck, Bowling Green State University, another State of Ohio public tax-supported university in northwest Ohio and about 20 to 30 miles from Toledo, is in a higher ranking category than is the University of Toledo. What does Bowling Green State University have that the University of Toledo doesn't have? Could Bowling Green State University possibly have a better President and better administrative team than does the University of Toledo?

My present perception and impression of the administration of the University of Toledo is that the current administration is top heavy with too many administrators, inept, inefficient, ineffective, non-caring, uninvolved, and just plain overall bad. There needs to be a full-housecleaning of the University of Toledo Administration with a total make-over and do-over.

Here are a few more quotes from the article:

"The University of Toledo has begun a formal initiative to raise its U.S. News rankings from the "fourth tier" to the "third tier" of national universities when the next edition hits newstands in August."

"A move into the third tier would place UT among 65 other universities, including Bowling Green State University, the University of Cincinnati, and Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich."

"UT President Lloyd Jacobs in January told the university's board of trustees it was his goal for UT to attain a second-tier U.S. News ranking before the end of his tenure. He declined an interview for this article"

Gee, why am I not surprised that University of Toledo President Lloyd Jacobs declined to be interviewed for the article. If you have previously read or now read the Roland Hansen Commentary University of Toledo: A Non-Responsive Bureaucracy, you might understand why a nonresponse from Dr. Lloyd Jacobs, the President of the University of Toledo, does not surprise me in the least.

Why not read the entire article UT begins push to improve ranking among U.S. colleges by Blade staff writer JC Reindl for yourself? If you do read the entire article, you will be able to read excuse after excuse for the lackluster ranking of the University of Toledo.

Head over this way and you can look at U.S.News.com: America's Best Colleges 2008: University of Toledo where you can then click on several embedded links for more information about the University of Toledo.

University of Toledo: More BS, as in BULL

With the University of Toledo being the topic of Roland Hansen Commentary today, a reference to BS might refer to Bachelor of Science; but, that is not the case.

I just read with great interest a story from The Independent Collegian. After having read the article, all I can sputter is "What a bunch of BS!" (Hint: the "B" stands for "bull" and the "S" - well, you can fill that in for yourself.)

Tell you what. Click on over to read Board approves restructuring plan, University to be reorganized into new colleges and schools; implementation process to begin by Hasan Dudar; and then, tell me of your reaction.

Ya know? This is not the first Roland Hansen Commentary about the University of Toledo. I have made several blog entries about the University of Toledo. To get the flavor of my perspective of U.T. under the watch of Lloyd Jacobs, you might click over to read these three previous commentaries of mine:
University of Toledo: A Non-Responsive Bureaucracy
University of Toledo: A Success As A Failure OR A Failure At Success?
University of Toledo: President Dr. Lloyd Jacobs Should Resign Or Be Fired

There are more Roland Hansen Commentary entries about U.T. that you may read; and if you so desire, go ahead and knock your socks off. But, I think you catch my drift.

Postnote: The University of Toledo is a great place to learn, thanks to its excellent faculty and faculty support staff, and no thanks to (or should that be "despite"?) its administration
