Mel Arndt addresses the gun control debate.
Mel Arndt, my friend since childhood who I met during my school years, wrote on May 31, 2022 on his Facebook about his perspective on the debate concerning the issue of gun control.
Mel has put a lot of thought in formulating his perspective. While I, myself, believe the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution should be repealed, Mel Arndt believes differently. And while, he and I have reached different conclusions about regulations on guns in the United States, I appreciate and respect the thoughts he has put forth in formulating his opinion on this extremely important issue in America today.
The following is a copy and paste of what my friend Mel posted on his Facebook.
I've listened to all the arguments about guns and gun control. The latest shooter acquired his rifles legally. I'm not sure gun control is the be all end all solution to this problem. It may help, but ultimately will fall short. I believe this is just one symptom of a much bigger problem and until it is addressed this problem will not go away.
My Dad was a hunter and owned several rifles and a shotgun. None of them was semiautomatic. No need to be.
Neither I or my friends ever considered using a gun against another person. Born in 1947 the memory of WWII still loomed large. I had cap guns. We often played war. That didn't result in shootings. We also were not inundated with films or programs where a gun is used to solve problems with seemingly no consequences.
Something has happened to cause these events. My personal belief is that since Nixon the average citizen has had opportunities snatched from their grasp. Wages have been essentially stagnate. Prices have gone through the roof! When I graduated one could reasonably expect to work a Summer job and could put by enough to cover attending a university or college. Try that today! I worked in a small off campus bar and was paid $20 per night. I could work as much or as little as I chose. I usually worked 4 or 5 nights per week. My apartment rent was $90 a month and included utilities. I covered that easily! It fell within the common wisdom of the day that housing should not exceed 25% of your income. Even if you were paid $15/hour now it would not meet that criteria!!! One could also have a job that you could work until retirement. I wouldn't want to be a young person now. I would be frustrated at every turn!!
We need to end violence in games, television and films that show individuals using guns to solve problems with no consequences!
We need to provide free medical care for everyone! Supposedly being the richest nation on the planet we are told we can't afford it. If that is the case why are we the only industrialized nation that can't?
We need to assure our representatives are working for EVERYONE not just those with deep pockets. We have no plan for where we wanted our nation to be in 10, 20 or 50 years. There should be no agreements to vote as a block before they attend the first session. Term limits will not fix this. We already have term limits.... They are disguised as elections.
We need to stop the dissemination of false information.
We need to provide education for everyone at no cost. Other countries do somehow. Others also give student a basic income while in school.
We need to assure that no one goes hungry.
No one should go to bed hungry. Ever.
We need to eliminate discrimination. No one group, race or religion should be excluded for the sole reason other than being born into the wrong sex, color or religion.
Until these issues have been addressed we will never solve the gun issue. We have some unworldly number of guns in our country. Even if we banned all of them there are enough already out there to last centuries! Until we eliminate the root causes for these shootings they will never end.
Just my opinion. Like it. Don't like. I don't really care. I see our society as having lost touch with reality. No one party will have the answers, but if we continue as we have eliminating guns will be as effective as taking an aspirin as a cure-all for any and all diseases.

Covid-19 Anti-Vaxxers are Inconsiderate and Deplorable!
This Roland Hansen Commentary blog entry is a copy and paste of a posting made elsewhere on the internet by someone I know. In that I do not have permission, I cannot provide attribution.
Here it is:
WHY THE SCHADENFREUDE?
You’ve likely seen it. I’ve posted “KARMA” headlined content mocking those who publicly and vigorously spread lies about vaccines and/or politicized COVID restrictions as some unAmerican “assault on freedom”… and then became infected by COVID and died.
Some say that’s cruel.
I say it’s necessary.
Because walking around unvaccinated and unrestricted in the throes of a consequential, spreading, and raging pandemic IS NO DIFFERENT THAN DRUNK DRIVING because yes, you might die by your inexcusable behavior, but worse, YOU MIGHT TAKE INNOCENT PEOPLE WITH YOU to the grave.
And there’s the rub.
There’s the difference.
That’s why I mock.
That’s why I suggest they got what they deserved.
Because, unlike risky choices that only endanger the chooser - like BASE jumping, skydiving, mountain climbing, hang gliding, or tightrope walking, we have the unvaccinated potentially catching and spreading a fatal disease to others, including their own family and anyone they can convince to join them.
Eschewing vaccines and then mingling among us isn’t different than driving impaired by drinks or drugs.
Your “freedoms” END when you ENDANGER OTHERS!
And now TWO YEARS INTO THIS, those who ignore the science CANNOT claim they didn’t know better. And let’s remember, I only point out the passing of those who PUBLICLY and PROUDLY spread LIES about vaccines, masks, and distancing. I only target those who HEARD and SAW THE FACTS AND DATA and STILL
SELFISHLY BEHAVED WITH COMPLETE DISREGARD FOR THE CONSEQUENCES to either themselves or OTHERS.
I bother to point out who they are because there’s a chance those who are doing the same thing might WAKE UP and STOP BEING THE REASON WE CAN’T END THIS NIGHTMARE.
They’re not “victims”. They’re PERPETRATORS and they must be called out.
Even after they’re gone.
In fact… ESPECIALLY after they’re gone.

A Day in the Life of Sue Republican
The following is a' Copy and Paste' from a Facebook Posting to which I was referred by a friend:
A day in the Life of Sue Republican
Sue gets up at 6 a.m. and fills her coffeepot with water to prepare her morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards.
With her first swallow of coffee, she takes her daily medication. Her medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised.
All but $10 of her medications are paid for by her employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Sue gets it too.
She prepares her morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Sue's bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.
In the shower, Sue reaches for her shampoo. Her bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for her right to know what she was putting on her body and how much it contained.
Sue dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air she breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air.
She walks to the subway station for her government-subsidized ride to work. It saves her considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
Sue begins her work day. She has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Sue's employer pays these standards because Sue's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union.
If Sue is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, she'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn't think she should lose her home because of her temporary misfortune.
Its noon and Sue needs to make a bank deposit so she can pay some bills. Sue's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Sue's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.
Sue has to pay her Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and her below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Sue and the government would be better off if she was educated and earned more money over her lifetime.
Sue is home from work. She plans to visit her father this evening at his farm home in the country. She gets in her car for the drive. Her car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards.
She arrives at her childhood home. Her generation was the third to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification.
She is happy to see her father, who is now retired. Her father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Sue wouldn't have to.
Sue gets back in her car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Sue enjoys throughout her day. Sue agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm self-made and believe everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have".

ProChoice IS NOT ProAbortion. WORDS MATTER!!!
When it concerns pregnancy and whether to carry to full term or to terminate pregnancy, I believe it is the pregnannt woman's right to choose, not your right, nor my right. There are some people who allege that being pro-choice is the same as pro-abortion; I respectfully disagree with that interpretation. The anti pro-choice people put their own spin on the subject to make it seem that those of us who believe in a woman's right to choose what to do with her own body during pregnancy are ogres who believe in murdering babies --- that is a total untruth!!!
Please read the following "copy and paste' of what I read on Facebook; it fairly well captures my thoughts on this sensitive and polaring topic.
I'm not pro-abortion... I'm pro-Beatrice who found out at her 20 week anatomy scan that the infant she had been so excited to bring into this world had developed without life sustaining organs.I'm pro-Sable who was sexually assaulted on her way home from work, only to come to the horrific realization that her assailant planted his seed in her when she got a positive pregnancy test result a month later.I'm pro-Thea who hemorrhaged due to a placental abruption, causing her parents, spouse, and children to have to make the impossible decision on whether to save her or her unborn child.I'm pro-little Cathy who had her innocence ripped away from her by someone she should have been able to trust and her 11 year old body isn't mature enough to bear the consequence of that betrayal.I'm pro-Melissa who's working two jobs just to make ends meet and has to choose between bringing another child into poverty or feeding the children she already has because her spouse walked out on her. (Maybe one of those is a minimum wage job at Hobby Lobby, and she can't afford birth control because her employer went to the Supreme Court to make sure her insurance plan doesn't cover it.)I'm pro-Beverly who realizes that she is in no way financially, emotionally, or physically able to raise a child.I'm pro-Maxine who went through IVF, ending up with SIX viable implanted eggs requiring selective reduction in order to ensure the safety of her and a SAFE amount of fetuses.I'm pro-Jessica who is FINALLY getting the strength to get away from her physically abusive spouse only to find out that she is carrying the monster's child.I'm pro-Vera who went into her confirmation appointment after YEARS of trying to conceive only to hear silence where there should be a heartbeat.I'm pro-Layla who lost her virginity in her sophomore year with a broken condom and now has to choose whether to be a teenage mom or just a teenager.I'm pro-CeeCee who just found out she's already 13 weeks along, but the egg never made it out of her fallopian tube so either she terminates the pregnancy or risks dying from internal bleeding. You can say I'm pro-choice but the truth is I'm pro-life. Their lives. Women's lives. You don't get to pick and choose which scenarios should be accepted. It's not about which stories you don't agree with. It's about fighting for the women in the stories that you do agree with and the CHOICE that was made.Women's rights are meant to protect ALL women, regardless of their situation or how big their bank account is. Because, let's face it, girls & women with money (yes, even those who may have voted for this bill) will always be able to find safe abortions just as they did before Roe v Wade. Most poor women will still get abortions too, whether from centuries old, unsafe, home methods or from opportunistic untrained people.Roe v. Wade didn't create abortion. It ended desperate women dying from them.
ProChoice IS NOT ProAbortion. Words matter, people!

A Threat from Troy Neff of Toledo, Ohio
It was on June 24, 2021 at 8:40 a.m. that Troy Neff made a threat to me in his comment on my Roland's Ramblings blog entry entitled Regarding Troy Neff of Toledo, Ohio in response to me posting this link to his public post that he made about me on his Facebook wall that I had placed on that blog entry as a response to another comment made previously by Troy.
Here is a copy and paste of the comment that Troy Neff made in which he, himself wrote "I promise I won’t be nice. I’ll give you all the attention you don’t want. That’s a threat.":
Roland, dude, just fucking stop. What the fuck is your purpose??
I actually looked and read some of your recent posts. Looks like I’m the only one who did, by the way.
You’re depressed based on your own words. Stop worrying about the speck in my eye and work on the log in yours.
I honestly hope you get help. Attacking me because you’re unhappy and your kids can’t stand you is ridiculous. I’m old. You’re even older. Grow the fuck up.
If you post one more time? I promise I won’t be nice. I’ll give you all the attention you don’t want. That’s a threat. Not a physical threat but a threat. You want me to be a bully? Be careful what you wish for. What I say will hurt. It will hurt because it will be the truth. And you haven’t been honest with yourself. It’s pretty obvious.
Knock it off.

Estrangement in American Families is Not Uncommon!
The American family of today is not the same as it was a generation and more ago. The intimacy and closeness of families in the United States of America that was once the norm is now a thing of the past. All too often, adult children in America are tossing their parents aside, abandoning them, foresaking them, and disowning them. Estrangements within families are becoming a societal epidemic, in my opinion.
My wife and I have both been the object of alienation from adult children. We wed in December of 1995 and have a blended family. My wife has two children from her previous marrige; and, I have three children from my previous marriage. At the time we wed, my wife's son was 27 years of age and was married with one child, and her daughter was 25, married and had one child; none of my children were married, my oldest son was 22, my younger son was 21, and my daughter was 18. At the beginning, we all got along, although our respective children never really became close.
As the years went by, things changed. My wife's son and his wife eventually had a total of 5 children; my wife's daughter and her husband eventually had another child and they have two children. My younger son married at age 25 and he and his wife have two children, and my daughter wed at age 34 and she and her husband have two children.
It was around 2010 that I was informed that my wife's son forbade me from entering his house and and seeing his children (To this day, no one has told me why I was shut out!). Meanwhile, my wife's son continued to speak with his mother for approximately the next ten years, and allowed her to visit him and his children UNTIL he finally tossed her aside and stopped speaking with her around late 2019 / early 2020. My wife's daughter cast me aside for the second time in three years and stopped speaking with me altogether sometime around 2014; and, she totally disrespected her mother (my wife) abandoning her in 2016 by means of sending a series of nasty, abusive text messages.
For about the past year-and-one-half now, my married son has not answered the phone when I have telephoned (thank you caller ID), has not returned my messages left on his telephone answering system, has not responded to any of my numerous electronic messages (e-mails, etc.), and has not responded to any of my written correspondence sent via United States Postal Service.
That of which I have written about my own family is only part of the family dysfunction that exists. More estrangement exists with siblings, nephews, nieces, and cousins. We have a very large extended family. Undoubtedly, this blog entry will only make some family members become (more) upset with me. However, I have reached out so many, many times to the various family members who have so easily and consciously chosen to throw my wife and I aside, only to be ignored, that I have decided it is finally time I accept the fact that we are dead to them and to get on with what is left of our lives. What a terrible shame that we, a 73 year-old man and 72 year-old woman, must finish our lives like this!
It has been relayed to me that I make public that which should remain private. It has been said that I embarass family members by what I say or write. I say I am who I am. I say people should be accountable and responsible for their own words and actions. I say no one other than me should be judged for my words and my actions. If what I say or write about someone else is true but it embaraases them, then they need to look within themselves, not blame me for what they have said and done. If I am to remain estranged from some of my family, and should I die tonight, at least maybe this Roland Hansen Commentary blog entry might open some eyes and cause people to introspect and to think about their value system as it relates to family interpersonal relationships.
I have recently read a very interesting article which profers that American values are fueling estrangement. The article concludes with:
Yet in less grave scenarios our American love affair with the needs and rights of the individual conceals how much sorrow we create for those we leave behind. We may see cutting off family members as courageous rather than avoidant or selfish. We can convince ourselves that it’s better to go it alone than to do the work it takes to resolve conflict. Some problems may be irresolvable, but there are also relationships that don’t need to be lost forever.
It is sometimes tempting to see family members as one more burden in an already demanding life. It can be hard to see their awkward attempts to care for us, the confounding nature of their struggles, and the history they carry stumbling into the present. It can be difficult to apologize to those we’ve hurt and hard to forgive those who have hurt us. But sometimes the benefits outweigh the costs. Tara Westover wrote in her memoir, Educated, “I know only this: that when my mother told me she had not been the mother to me that she wished she’d been, she became that mother for the first time.”
We are all flawed. We should have that at the forefront of our minds when deciding who to keep in or out of our lives—and how to respond to those who no longer want us in theirs.
I encourage you to read the entire article. To do so, just follow the embedded ink contained within its title.
ref: Coleman, Joshua, A Shift in American Family Values Is Fueling Estrangement, The Atlantic, January 10, 2021.
Unfortunately, estrangement in American families is not uncommon!
